Trace the distinction on paper
Stone Age Manufacturing shows an ash dump replacing a brick in the firebox floor, leading to a masonry pit with a separate cleanout opening. CSIA's homeowner guide distinguishes an ash dump area from a chimney cleanout. The presence of a door alone cannot establish which one is on your house.
Look for evidence of a later change
A previous owner may have covered a lower opening, moved a cabinet in front of it or installed an appliance in the old fireplace. Take a picture of the room and wall with the appliance cold. Do not open an unfamiliar compartment, dislodge a stuck plate or empty an ash pit as an experiment.
Leave a service route in the design
Ask the provider to identify the purpose of each opening, its condition and how it is accessed for maintenance. If enclosure or alteration is proposed, agree on a professional assessment before finish work begins. Mark the verified location on the room drawing so future work does not bury it again.
