Explain how the fireplace is used

Share how often you burn, the fuel you use and whether performance has changed. Mention smoke or a persistent smell even if you mainly want cleaning. Say if the previous maintenance date is unknown.

Keep cleaning and condition distinct

Removing deposits does not restore a damaged liner, repair missing joints or correct an incompatible installation. If an issue becomes apparent during the visit, ask for a separate explanation of the finding and recommended response. Ask which concerns remain after cleaning.

Prepare the room, not the chimney

Arrange the visit when the fireplace is cold and unused. Move easily handled decorative items away from the working area and tell us about access restrictions. Do not dismantle doors, move the appliance or attempt to remove material from the flue yourself. Have previous repair records available. Before the appointment, discuss room access and the work area so the visit can be planned around the home. Ask what the cleaning addresses and how any additional findings will be explained. Keep the service record rather than relying on the hearth’s appearance afterward.
