Describe smoke separately from odor

Say whether you saw smoke, smelled an old soot-like odor or noticed something you cannot identify. Record whether the fireplace was burning or cold. If smoke is actively entering the living space, discontinue use and arrange assessment; if there is a suspected fire or immediate danger, leave and call 911.

Include the pattern around the house

CSIA notes that chimney odors can involve both deposits and air moving down the chimney. Tell us whether the smell appears with air conditioning, after the house has been closed or at another repeatable time. These observations do not establish which modification, if any, is appropriate.

Do not use smell as a safety test

Carbon monoxide cannot be identified by smell. A pleasant or odor-free room is not evidence that a combustion system is working properly. If a CO alarm sounds, move outside immediately, call 911 and remain out until responders allow re-entry. You can describe the concern without recreating it: when it starts, whether the fireplace is cold or in use, and whether changes in the room preceded it. If smoke is entering the living space, discontinue use and seek assessment instead of trying another fire.
