Identify how the firebox was made
Look at the paperwork for a factory-built fireplace. The model and serial range can determine the right replacement panels and the manual's criteria for evaluation. A masonry firebox built from individual firebrick uses a different construction. A photograph of the whole opening helps place a close view of the crack.
Describe the change without prying at it
Note whether it is a fine line, a displaced section, a new gap or an area with material missing. Hearth & Home's refractory guidance gives model-specific replacement conditions, including large pieces breaking away. Do not transfer one manual's crack limit to another model or pick at the surface to check its depth.
Ask what a replacement quote includes
Which panel is affected: the floor, a side or the rear? Does the proposed part match the identified fireplace? Ask who will check the surrounding panels and what instructions apply after replacement. Keep a part reference for later maintenance rather than relying on the decorative pattern.
