Identify what the package is designed to do

A starter is intended to help ignite another approved fuel. A manufactured firelog has its own burning instructions, which can include rules about the wrapper, grate, number of logs and whether to add firewood. Similar packaging does not mean the operating rules carry over. If the wrapper is missing and you cannot identify the product, set it aside.

Compare two real manufacturer instructions

Duraflame advises against adding wood to its regular firelog. EnviroLog’s FAQ permits adding suitable firewood to certain fires started with its product, subject to its instructions. Those differences are why a neighbor’s experience with another brand is a poor rule. Check the precise product line, including any indoor or outdoor restriction.

Check the fireplace side of the decision

A package intended for an open fireplace may be unsuitable for a wood stove or insert. Neither regular wood nor manufactured wood firelogs belong in a gas fireplace. When the fireplace manual and package do not both support the intended use, leave the product out. Keep the instructions until the fire is out and the hearth is cold.
