Read the local observation and the forecast
Enter the property’s ZIP code or city on AirNow. Check the time on the current reading and whether particle pollution or ozone is driving it. For visible smoke, the Fire and Smoke Map and official advisories offer additional context. Use the forecast for the time you plan to have a fire, since yesterday’s clear reading cannot describe tonight’s conditions.
Decide whether the fire can wait
AirNow advises avoiding additional combustion, including wood fireplaces, when smoke levels are high. Pay attention to official local directions and whether members of the household are especially sensitive to smoke. A cool evening or a freshly swept flue does not reduce the outdoor pollution already present.
Keep a room-side problem separate
If smoke repeatedly enters the room when the fireplace is operating, record when it happens and stop using the appliance until it can be evaluated. The outdoor air quality index measures ambient conditions, not the draft or carbon monoxide in your home. In a fire emergency or when a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get outside and call emergency services.
