Locate evidence of the earlier arrangement

A photo from before the room update may show an appliance, gas logs or an open firebox. Keep that evidence even if the present opening looks ready for wood. Bring only paperwork and room-side photographs. Do not try burning newspaper to find out whether the chimney is open.

Compare what was covered with what was disconnected

A flat panel fixed over a decorative opening may have been added simply to change the room. An old connector disappearing into the wall or an altered flue can indicate that somebody changed the function of the system. The room may look much the same after either panel comes off. Leave the hearth unused while the provider identifies the appliance, vent path and any remaining alterations. An estimate to sweep an existing passage should not be read as a proposal to reconnect an appliance.

Choose a cleaning scope that fits the finding

Loose debris in the firebox can be removed without establishing the condition of the flue. Ask the provider whether mechanical sweeping is appropriate, which passage will be cleaned and whether an inspection is needed before wood use can be considered. A blocked or disconnected passage needs assessment before routine maintenance.

Schedule decisions before the wall closes

Suppose the room contractor is scheduled to install trim on Friday but the provider can only identify a blocked section during the first appointment. Ask what access the next assessment needs before Friday's work goes ahead. If the contractor can continue elsewhere, record the specific edge or opening to leave accessible. At handover, request separate findings on cleaning, any repair and whether the system is suitable for the wood use you have in mind.

Check the correct permitting authority

New Smyrna Beach directs city applications through its EnerGov Citizen Self Service portal and distinguishes unincorporated Volusia County permitting on the same page. If a mailing address says New Smyrna Beach but the project scope changes beyond cleaning, confirm which jurisdiction serves the property before relying on a city permit search. Keep a transaction or inspection record with the project; it is separate from the professional's chimney assessment.

Record what the hearth is now intended for

Leave the next owner a record of whether the fireplace was evaluated for burning wood, retained for decorative use or referred for further work. Where an old connection remains uncertain, write that explicitly. A new surround can make any of those arrangements look finished.
